CLASS 127 DERBY SUBURBAN DMU

THE PROTOTYPE

Thirty 4-car units were built by BR at Derby for use between St. Pancras and Luton/Bedford and designated Class 127.  They were designed as a stop-gap solution to enable the removal of steam hauled services until electrification scheduled for 1982.  Delays saw these units continue until 1984.  These units were originally designated as Blue Square, but problems between hydraulic and mechanical transmissions had them redesignated Red Triangle in 1969.
