IR / IÉ ELECTRICITY GENERATING VAN (MK3)

THE PROTOTYPE

Seven Generator Vans (7601–07) were built at Derby Litchurch Lane Works. The remaining eight (7608–15) were built under licence in Inchicore between 1984 and 1989.  British Rail’s BT22 Air Suspension bogie was air-braked and converted to run on 5 ft 3 in gauge.

On 21st September 2009, all of the Mk3 sets were withdrawn and started to be scrapped in 2012.  However, in 2009, four Electricity Generating Vans (including 7608, 7613) were transferred to Belfast for work on the cross border Enterprise service.  They were converted to run with push/pull services and entered service in September 2012.
