THE PROTOTYPE
The Inter-City units were designed for the Birmingham – Swansea service on the Western Region and the Glasgow – Edinburgh service on the Scottish Region. It wasn’t long before the Western Region units joined the Scottich Region ones. They were the first units to be built on the long 64.5 ft under frames.
They were designed to be run as 3 car or 6 car units and to facilitate this, uniquely one end was built with a corridor connection.
The Class 126’s were developed from this design.
