THE PROTOTYPE
The Class 115 was a design of four car Diesel Multiple Unit built for British Rail at Derby. They were high-density units, externally very similar to the Class 127 but were internally superior with bigger windows and better furnishings. They were powered by the Leyland Albion engines. None were originally built with corridor connections, but later on, some had them fitted.
Fifty-one units were built in batches of fifteen, twenty and six. The first two large batches were for the services out of Marylebone to High Wycombe, Banbury and Aylesbury. The batch of six were destined for the Liverpool Manchester services via the Cheshire Lines Committee route.
In their final days, the batch of 6 were reallocated to work out of Marylebone and a number of units worked from Tyseley.
